Alumni Stories

Dear Brothers of Theta Chi:

What a privilege and what an honor to be with all of you last Saturday night as you celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of the Delta Zeta Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I am still reliving the memories of past Theta Chi experiences while relishing in the new ones from being with the brothers over the years and most recently with all of you last Saturday.

As I mentioned when I addressed all of you last week, Theta Chi not only provided my brother a community of brothers, it also provided me with a community of older brothers; brothers whom I respect and admire. John’s life ended too early. It spite of this, his participation in the fraternity and friendship with all of you was deeply enriched through a gamut opportunities and experiences. Opportunities and experiences that made him feel as though “he was one of the guys”.

I was not only honored to be with all of you, I was also deeply humbled. Over the last ten years, John has been honored and remembered in a fashion, I could only hope or dream to be able to accomplish. To see and meet the men who have received the award in John’s honor, I, through brief meetings, could observe traits and characteristics of my brother in each of the recipients. A legacy and remembrance to carry on the brother and man he endeavored to become in his twenty-seven years of life.

I thank-you for that occasion.

I am embarrassed for not addressing it from the podium; however, it seemed fitting and right that Mike Farquarh was the recipient of the award last Saturday. A man whose dedication and service to any organization he joins reflects commitment, passion, and loyalty. He is an exemplary example and John certainly would be smiling with his sly grin. (Just as he would be saying, “Barbie” in a tone and infliction I can still remember when I rode the gator crawl.)

On behalf of my husband and myself, my sincere gratitude for the dinner invitation.

On behalf of my family and John ~ my heartfelt humbleness for keeping John’s spirit alive and continuing his legacy.

May your fraternity of brotherhood prosper!

I have been away from the website for awhile, but with the 60th approaching, I decided to sign on and get the updates. One thign I read was Farq's story about John and his request for stories about John.

I do not have a specific story, but can attest to the car in the hole accident. what I wanted to hopefully convey is a sense of who was John Reek.

I don't think I have ever met a nicer person in my life. He was kind to everyone one he encountered, never had anything bad to say, or looked down at anyone. He was always willing to give his time to help another brother and asked for nothing in return.

During the past couple of years and happenings in my life, I have thought about John and how he accepted what life gave him, but would not let it define him. I have tried to live to that testament, but it is hard. John lived that everyday.

When he told us about his car being in a hole, he was not upset, mad, or yelling. He was calm and accepting and understood what needed to be done. The best part of that night is when we went back to the car. Of course there were some laughs, but not at John. That night John came to his Fraternity Brothers as he had before and asked for the Helping Hand that he had given so many times before.

I miss John and think of him often. I hope that everyone can see the world John so loved and cherished. He was truly one of a kind and I am proud to have known him and called him a Brother.

So where does one with heavy involvement over 10yrs begin to talk about his time with the chapter... I guess the best idea is to start at the begining how did I join.. where, why, how on earth did the guy who signed having a mohawk and a peirced nipple end up in this chapter????

I have one answer folks KD I'll give initials only as to not incriminate the girl who dated over 2 dozen Theta Chi's.  hehe

Yes KD had been dating the treasurer at the time and I was basically recruited over the phone by him then additionally by Adam dougins at an event at Pete Wetzel's house where my soon to be pledge father Robert Lopez was thrown into the pool fully clothed and fried his cell phone and pager (yes I'm old people still had pagers) Jason Hipsher showed off the cast on his recently broken leg I'm sure at some point Ben weeks was on Dave creath's shoulders and so on either way i signed in front of Jon Happel, Chris Dow and Adam Dougins... we proceeded to go to a party at the place where Rot lived with Alex and someone else, which surprise got busted ..... and so the adventure began

It is funny how so years later where ever I am at when I hear the intro for Louie Louie I start looking for Brothers so we can do the Gator.  Even when no Brothers are around. The Pavlov dog conditioning theory has worked very well on me.

It is nice even years later to see that the younger guys still have fun with it. But ours was better. I think it was thanks to guys like Parks and Kline jumping over the other guys back and forth. Kinda hard to beat that.

So does anyone else want to write anything about their times with Theta Chi at OU or UNO?  Please register and do so.

We have you register so we don't get blasted with junk mail about relatives in Africa with tons of cash or ways to enlarge our body parts.

Thanks
Farquhar

Brothers,

One of the questions I get from newer members is who is John. Usually this question comes during formal we

ek when they give the John C Reek award. So Brothers help me out. Lets start a line of John Stories and why we give the award. I will start with one of my favorites. Please send the admin an email and get set up to post.

This story happened near the end of a party at 4102 Nicholas. We were hanging out in the house and people were leaving when John said his good byes. Probably after checking to make sure that no one else needed a ride. About 10 minutes later he was back. We were like what is up john?  His response was classic John. No worry in his voice He stated that his car was in a hole. No big deal right?  Certainly from his voice it sounded like no big deal. So off we went to get his car out of the hole.

Now I was thinking pot hole. The other guys were thinking pot hole. We were not thinking HOLE! Well we were thinking wrong. 1/3 of Johns car was in the hole. Construction of some type was being done in front of a home in the street and there was a deep large hole. The barricades had been taken down and John drove right in. So back to the house to get more help and we had Brothers sit on the back of the car as the rest took to sides and the front and moved the car back up to the street. John was like OK, no big deal, and took off home. He was very nonchalant about the whole thing. That was the John I knew.
